The first half hour after opening sets the tone for the day: if a register won't start, roll cages from the overnight delivery block the aisles and yesterday's yogurt is on the shelf, customers see it immediately. A morning walkthrough catches what happened overnight — a fridge failure, an unfinished price change, a short-staffed shift — while the store is still empty.
Follow the route: outside and entrance, then equipment and refrigeration, the checkout line, the sales floor, and finally a short huddle with the shift. Fix anything that takes a couple of minutes on the spot. Record everything else with a photo and an owner: you can open with a register down, but never with a blocked emergency exit.

Common violations
- Boxes and roll cages from the overnight delivery are still in the aisles at opening: customers trip over them and carts can't reach the shelf they need.
- An emergency exit is blocked with stock "just for an hour until it's put away" — a serious violation in any inspection, and in a fire the exit is needed immediately.
- A fridge shut off or went into defrost overnight and nobody noticed in the morning: perishables are sold after temperature abuse, and the food poisoning risk falls on the store.
- The overnight price change isn't finished: the old price on the shelf, the new one at the register — customers argue at checkout, and in many countries it's also a consumer protection violation.
- The cash float is issued "by eye" without being recorded: in the evening a variance can't be explained or traced to anyone.
Frequently asked questions
15–20 minutes in a convenience store, up to half an hour in a store of 500 m² (about 5,000 sq ft) or more. Allow enough time to fix what you find before the doors open.
The shift lead or supervisor assigned to it on the schedule. What matters is that one person goes through the checklist from start to finish and signs it with their own name.
Don't sell product from that fridge until the person in charge decides: move it to working equipment, record the readings and time, and call for service. The write-off decision follows your chain's rules and local food safety regulations.
