The fitting room is where shoppers decide to buy — and also the biggest shrink area in a clothing store. A dirty floor with pins, a broken hook and a curtain that won't close put people off trying things on, while piles of go-backs and torn-off tags in the cubicles mean merchandise is not getting back to the floor or is walking out unpaid.

The walk-through takes a few minutes: check every cubicle, clear the go-back rack and watch how item control works at the entrance. Do not throw away torn-off security tags or labels — photograph where you found them and report it to the supervisor or security.

Common violations

  • Items from the fitting room hang on the go-back rack for hours: best-selling sizes are missing from the floor even though the store has them.
  • Number tags are issued only some of the time or not checked on exit — the fitting room becomes the easiest place to wear an item out under your own clothes.
  • Torn-off tags and security sensors are thrown away without telling anyone: the store loses the chance to match the find with entrance camera footage and work out when the theft happened.
  • An item with a foundation stain goes back on the floor — the next shopper sees the damage and leaves with an impression of carelessness.
  • A camera is positioned so it can see inside the cubicles: this violates shoppers' privacy and is a serious legal risk.

Frequently asked questions

Before opening and every hour during the day, and more often on weekends and at peak times — for example, every 30 minutes. Tie the go-back rack clear-out to a fixed time so it doesn't get postponed.

Photograph the item and where it was found, keep it, and report it to the supervisor or security with the time. The time lets you find the shopper who used that cubicle on the fitting room entrance camera footage.

Assign the area to a specific associate on every shift and put it on the schedule. If nobody is assigned, everyone checks the fitting rooms and in practice no one does.
