Most workplace injuries are caused not by complex equipment but by everyday things: a puddle on the floor, a box lifted with a jerk, a knife hidden under foam in the sink, a "slightly" damaged cable and cleaning chemicals mixed "for extra effect". The test checks that every employee knows the basic rules of safe work and understands why any injury or hazard must be reported immediately.
The test does not replace the mandatory health and safety briefings and training required by the regulations of your country, or equipment manuals and chemical safety data sheets. Take the procedure for injuries and the responsible persons from your organization's rules. Two questions are marked as critical: a mistake in them is a reason to repeat the briefing before the next shift.
General rules
-
1
A new employee is going to use a meat slicer for the first time. When can they start? Choose one answerAnswer: a. Hazardous equipment (slicers, meat grinders, dough mixers, hydraulic pallet trucks) is used only after a briefing and a demonstration by the person in charge. Techniques picked up from colleagues often include dangerous "shortcuts". Authorization to work is recorded according to the organization's rules.
-
2
If an employee sees a direct threat to life or health, they have the right to stop work and immediately inform their manager. True or false?Answer: True. Stopping dangerous work is not sabotage but the right thing to do: first the threat is removed, then work continues. The specific procedure and the employee's rights are set by the regulations of your country and the organization's rules.
-
3
You have slightly cut your finger, and the bleeding stopped quickly. Do you need to tell anyone? Choose one answerAnswer: b. Even a minor injury can develop complications, and without a record it is hard to prove later that it happened at work. Also, repeated minor injuries show where the hazards are: they are reviewed so that a serious one doesn't happen. In the kitchen, a cut is covered with a waterproof plaster and a glove. How to record an injury is set out in the organization's rules.
-
4
You are asked to work a second shift in a row, and you are very tired. What is the right thing to do? Choose one answerAnswer: b. Fatigue reduces attention and reaction speed, raising the risk of cuts, burns and falls. Your manager needs to know your condition to plan shifts with rest in mind. Working and rest hours are set by the regulations of your country and the organization's rules.
Floors, lifting, ladders, knives
-
5
Water has been spilled on the floor in a walkway. What should you do? Choose one answer Critical questionAnswer: a. Falls on slippery floors are among the most common injuries in food service and retail. A spill is cleaned up immediately, and until then a warning sign is put up or someone stays nearby to warn people. Cardboard gets wet and becomes slippery itself.
-
6
Put the steps for lifting a heavy box from the floor in the correct order. Put in the right orderAnswer: a → d → b → c. Backs are injured when a load is lifted using the lower back while bending over it, and when the body is twisted with a load in hand. Lift with your legs, hold the load close to your body and turn your whole body by stepping round. If a load is too heavy or awkward, ask for help or use a trolley.
-
7
How do you work safely with a stepladder? Select all correct answers. Choose all correct answersAnswer: a, b, c. A fall even from a small height can result in a serious injury. A stepladder is not placed on crates, chairs or uneven floors, you don't stand on the top steps if the manufacturer prohibits it, and you keep three points of contact. Chairs and boxes are not used instead of a stepladder.
-
8
A knife is falling off the table. What is the right thing to do? Choose one answerAnswer: a. Trying to catch a falling knife is a common cause of deep cuts to the palm. Step back, let the knife fall and pick it up by the handle.
-
9
Which rules for working with knives are correct? Select all correct answers. Choose all correct answersAnswer: b, c, d. A blunt knife needs more force and slips more often, so it is more dangerous than a sharp one. A knife under foam in the sink cannot be seen, and the person washing up cuts themselves on it. A stable board doesn't slide out from under the knife while cutting.
-
10
The cable insulation on the coffee machine is damaged. What should you do? Choose one answerAnswer: d. Damaged insulation can cause electric shock and fire. The equipment is switched off if this can be done safely, colleagues are warned (for example, with a sign) and the person in charge is informed. Electrical equipment is repaired only by a qualified specialist.
Electricity, chemicals and PPE
-
11
It is acceptable to switch electrical appliances on and off with wet hands if you do it quickly. True or false?Answer: False. Water conducts electricity, and wet hands sharply increase the risk of electric shock; speed makes no difference. Hands are dried thoroughly, and appliances are not switched on if water has been spilled on or near them.
-
12
What is the right way to work with cleaning and disinfecting products? Select all correct answers. Choose all correct answersAnswer: a, c, d. A product in a water or drink bottle can be drunk or mistaken for something else by accident. The label and the safety data sheet say how to dilute the product, what PPE is needed and what to do if it gets on the skin or in the eyes. Everyone should know where the safety data sheets are kept.
-
13
Can a chlorine-based product be mixed with an acidic toilet cleaner to clean better? Choose one answer Critical questionAnswer: c. Mixing chlorine-based products with acids releases toxic chlorine gas, and mixing them with ammonia also releases dangerous gases. An ordinary mask does not protect against them. Products are never mixed unless the instructions explicitly say so.
-
14
A cleaning product has got into your eye. What should you do? Choose one answerAnswer: b. Rinsing starts immediately and continues for a long time, usually at least 15 minutes or as long as stated in the product's safety data sheet; contact lenses are removed if this is easy to do. Then the manager is informed and medical help is sought, taking the label or the safety data sheet along.
-
15
Your protective gloves tore while you were working. What is the right thing to do? Choose one answerAnswer: b. Torn PPE no longer protects. It is replaced immediately; if a product has got on the skin, the hands are rinsed with water first. If the glove supply has run out, the manager is informed. Working without the PPE required by the instructions is not allowed.
-
16
The protective guard on equipment may be removed to work faster if you are careful. True or false?Answer: False. Guards, covers and interlocks protect against fingers being caught, cuts and burns. Without them, being careful doesn't help: an injury happens in a split second. Equipment must not be operated with the guards removed.
· Pass mark is 80%. Correct answers and explanations are shown below. A mistake in a critical question fails the test regardless of the score.

Frequently asked questions
No. The test helps check and reinforce basic rules, but it does not replace the mandatory briefings, training and knowledge assessments required by the regulations of your country.
Yes: add questions about your equipment, the chemicals you use, the PPE you issue and your procedure for injuries. The general rules on floors, lifting and electricity apply to kitchens, dining rooms, stores and warehouses.
New employees take it after the induction briefing, before working independently. Everyone else takes it every six months and after every injury or dangerous situation at the location. In jeCheck, the test is assigned to all positions, and you see the results for each location.
