Internal audits show how a hotel works when it knows it is being watched. A mystery guest sees an ordinary day: how the reservations call is handled, how long check-in takes, what happens to a request for an extra pillow at 11 p.m. It is the only way to test the entire guest journey from booking to check-out.
The evaluator fills in the form during the stay, not from memory the next day: right after each interaction, with the time and the staff member's name from their badge. The form includes several test scenarios (a pre-arrival call, an in-room request, a complaint), and all of them must be completed. Score on facts only, no "overall it was fine".

Common violations
- The evaluator fills in the form from memory after check-out. Wait times, names and details get lost, and the results turn into "impressions" that staff can easily dispute.
- The form only has "liked / didn't like" scores. Without scenarios (evening request, complaint, DND sign) the audit does not show how the hotel handles non-standard situations.
- The mystery guest is recognizable: an office employee or a regular guest. Staff change their behavior, and the audit shows a perfect picture that does not exist on ordinary days.
- Results are used only to punish. Staff start trying to "spot" mystery guests instead of working to standard with everyone.
- Audits always happen on weekdays in low season. The hotel's weak spots, such as peak arrivals, the night shift and weekends, stay unchecked.
Frequently asked questions
At least one night, to evaluate evening service, noise levels and breakfast. Two nights make it possible to check stayover housekeeping, which matters for evaluating the housekeeping department.
Yes, but after the evaluator has checked out and with a focus on facts. Good practice is to recognize by name the staff who performed to standard: it motivates more than going over mistakes.
An internal audit is a manager observing an employee at work, and staff know about it. A mystery guest goes through the entire guest journey anonymously and tests the handoffs between departments: reservations, front desk, housekeeping, restaurant.
