Members judge a club by its locker room more often than by its equipment. Hair in the drain, black grout in the showers, wet benches and a broken locker lead to bad reviews and cancelled renewals. It’s also the wettest and most slippery area of the club: people fall here, and mold and fungus grow fast if the cleaning schedule exists only on paper.
Check the men’s and women’s locker rooms along the same route: lockers, showers, restrooms, sauna, electrical appliances. The women’s locker room is checked by a female employee or at times when it’s empty — agree on this in your standard in advance. Issues found are fixed on the spot; recurring ones are raised with the cleaning contractor or housekeeping supervisor.

Common violations
- Showers are washed but the grout and corners aren’t treated: within a couple of weeks a dark buildup appears that no longer comes off, and members start photographing it for reviews.
- The cleaning sheet is filled in for the whole shift ahead. While the signatures are there, the locker room isn’t actually cleaned during the evening peak — exactly when it’s needed most.
- A broken locker isn’t taken out of circulation: a member gets a wristband, can’t lock their things and goes back to the desk — or worse, leaves them unlocked.
- A peeling mat at the shower exit is left until the evening clean — and that’s exactly where people slip with wet feet.
Frequently asked questions
A good reference is every 2–3 hours, and always before the evening peak when traffic is highest. Busy clubs check hourly during peak times and less often during the day.
Write it into your standard: the walkthrough is done by a female employee (front desk, housekeeping), or during windows when the locker room is empty, with a warning sign on the door. Photos in locker rooms are taken only when no members are present.
If the buildup keeps coming back after cleaning, the cause is usually ventilation or damaged grout rather than housekeeping. Photograph the spot, create a task for a technical inspection of the exhaust fan and grout, and check which instructions are used to dilute the product.
