Mystery Shopping in Kazakhstan: 2026 Prices

A mystery shopper is the simplest way to see your location through a customer’s eyes. Staff recognize a manager the moment they walk in, and while the manager is around, everything runs by the book. A mystery shopper, on the other hand, comes in as an ordinary customer: staff don’t know it’s a check. Here’s what mystery shopping costs in Kazakhstan in 2026, what drives the price and how to avoid paying for a questionnaire filled in at home.
What is a mystery shopper
A mystery shopper (mystery guest) is a person who visits a restaurant, store, salon or clinic on assignment and rates the service against a questionnaire. The questionnaire contains verifiable facts: were they greeted within the first minute, how long did they wait for their food, was dessert offered, did the bill match the order, was the restroom clean.
The result is a location score and a list of violations backed by evidence: photos, the receipt, timings and sometimes an audio recording of the conversation. If every location in a chain is checked with the same questionnaire, you can compare them with each other and track progress month to month.
Mystery shopping is ordered by:
- restaurants and cafes — welcome, menu knowledge, speed of service, the waiter’s recommendations, the bill;
- coffee shops and fast food — queue speed, drink standards, upselling, order accuracy;
- stores and boutiques — customer contact, product advice, handling objections, checkout;
- beauty salons and clinics — booking, waiting time, consultation, price transparency;
- hotels — booking, check-in, the room, response to requests.
A separate format is the mystery call: it checks how staff answer the phone, give advice and take bookings, without visiting the location.
How much does a mystery shopper cost in Kazakhstan
According to the public price lists of Kazakhstani agencies as of October 2026, prices are as follows:
| Format | Price for the business |
|---|---|
| Mystery call | from 3 500 ₸ |
| Visit to a store or service location | 7 000–10 000 ₸ in a package, 10 000–20 000 ₸ one-off |
| Visit with audio recording and a detailed report | from 15 000 ₸ |
| Turnkey project with analytics | from 30 000 ₸ per visit |
The shopper’s purchase or meal is almost always paid on top of this price. Many agencies take orders from 10 checks or work on a project basis only.
What makes up the price
- The mystery shopper’s fee. According to vacancies on Kazakhstani job sites, a simple visit pays 2 500–5 000 ₸, and a long visit with a 30–60 minute questionnaire pays more. Rates are higher in smaller cities, where there are fewer shoppers.
- Purchase reimbursement. The shopper pays and photographs the receipt, and is reimbursed up to the limit. According to Kazakhstani media, the average bill in cafes and restaurants in Almaty and Astana is 5 000–10 000 ₸ per person, and in fast food from 3 000 ₸.
- The organizer’s work. Shopper selection, cover story and briefing, supervision, questionnaire review, the report.
- Add-ons. Audio or video recording, a shopper of a specific gender and age, an exact visit time, urgency, regional travel.
How much to budget for the purchase
The purchase limit has to be realistic, otherwise the visit won’t look like a normal one:
- coffee shop — 2 500–3 500 ₸;
- fast food — 3 500–5 000 ₸;
- cafe — 6 000–8 000 ₸;
- restaurant or bar — 9 000–12 000 ₸;
- store — often no purchase is made, or it’s made and returned; this needs to be written into the scenario.
Agree in advance on alcohol and tips: whether they’re reimbursed and how much.
How often to check
For a chain, one or two visits per location per month on different days and at different times is enough: a weekday lunch, a weekend evening. Checking in waves is convenient: in one period, one visit to each location with the same questionnaire. That keeps locations comparable and shows progress from wave to wave.
After rolling out new standards or changing a manager, you can visit more often. But the same shopper shouldn’t come to a location too often — staff will start to recognize them.
How to write a mystery guest questionnaire
A good questionnaire has 20–40 verifiable questions in the order of the customer’s visit:
- each question is an observable fact. Not “Was the waiter polite?” but “The waiter greeted the guest and introduced themselves within 1 minute”;
- a Yes/No answer, with a comment if “No”;
- weights. Items critical to the experience (speed of service, cleanliness) carry more weight;
- photos where evidence is needed: the dish when served, the dining room, the receipt;
- 2–3 open questions at the end: what was good, what to improve, would the guest come back.
You can take ready-made questionnaires from our library (in Russian): restaurant mystery guest, store mystery shopper, clinic mystery patient and hotel mystery guest.
How to verify the mystery shopper actually visited you
The main risk is the “filled in from the couch” questionnaire: the shopper fills it in from memory or doesn’t show up at all. Demand evidence:
- a geotag at the moment of arrival — whether the shopper is near your location;
- timings — how long they spent on site and whether they came at the scheduled time;
- photos with capture dates — whether the images were taken on the day of the visit and aren’t reused from other checks;
- a photo of the receipt — time and amount match the visit;
- an audio recording — it shows whether the employee said what’s marked in the questionnaire.
If a questionnaire raises doubts, it goes back to the shopper with questions, and if the visit can’t be confirmed, it’s rejected and a new one is carried out.
What to do with the results
A mystery shopping report is useless if it just sits in your inbox. To make it work:
- Send the result to the location manager on the day of the check.
- Create a task with an owner and a deadline for each violation.
- Verify the fix — with an “after” photo or the next visit.
- Compare locations with each other and with the previous wave.
It’s even better when mystery shopping results sit next to your internal audits: you can see whether the picture “with the manager present” matches the picture “through the customer’s eyes”.
