# How to create a test with AI from your documents

> Upload procedures or pick instructions — AI analyzes the materials, asks clarifying questions and suggests a ready-made test with links to the documents.

The **Test from documents** wizard builds a test from your own materials: standards, procedures, recipe cards. AI reads the documents in full, shows what it understood, asks a few clarifying questions and suggests a test — for each question you can see which document it comes from. The result is a draft test in the regular builder.

## What you need

- administrator rights or the **Test editor** flag in the employee's profile;
- a plan that includes AI features;
- materials: instructions from the **Instructions** section and/or files.

## Step by step

1. **Open the wizard.** In the menu, go to **Work → Testing** and click **Test from documents**.
2. **Describe the goal.** In **What do you want to test?**, write who the test is for and what to focus on, for example "certification of new cooks, storage temperatures matter most". This field is optional.
3. **Add materials.** Up to 15, in any combination:
   - **From the knowledge base** — published instructions; text of files attached to them is included too;
   - **Upload files** — PDF, Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), Excel (.xlsx, .xls, .csv), TXT, Markdown, HTML, OpenDocument (.odt), photos and scans (JPG, PNG, WEBP), up to 20 MB each. You can drag and drop files;
   - **Paste text** — if the document isn't available as a file.

   Scans and photos without a text layer are recognized by AI — such materials are marked **recognized by AI**.
4. **Analyze the materials.** Click **Analyze materials**. After 30–60 seconds the **Clarifications** step opens.
5. **Check what AI understood.** At the top is a short summary of the materials and a **Please note** block if AI found contradictions or gaps. In **Topics to test**, untick topics you don't need. Topics marked **Critical** cover safety, sanitation and legal requirements.
6. **Answer the clarifying questions.** In **AI’s clarifying questions**, pick options or type your own answer — for example, who will take the test and what matters more: work situations or knowing the standards. You can skip them.
7. **Set the parameters.** In **Test parameters**, AI suggests the number of questions, **Difficulty**, **Passing score, %**, **Time, min** and **Question types** — change them if needed. Click **Suggest a test**.
8. **Review the test.** On the **Test** step, AI writes questions section by section — progress is shown at the top. Each question shows the correct answer, an explanation and the source document; click the document name to see the quote the answer is based on. Untick questions you don't need. You can edit the name, description, category and section names right here.
9. **Create the test.** Click **Create test** — the builder opens with the draft. Review the questions, then publish and assign the test (see [How to create a test](/docs/testing/create-test) and [How to assign a test](/docs/testing/assign-test)).

> [!TIP]
> Don't like a section? Click **Redo**, write what to change (for example, "more guest situations") and click **Redo section**. Other sections stay as they are.

## How AI works with the materials

- Questions are based only on the materials you added. Without materials, AI relies on your goal description and generally accepted standards for the topic.
- AI doesn't read a very large document in full — such materials are marked **truncated**. It's better to add the sections you need as separate files.
- AI writes six question types: single choice, multiple choice, true/false, short answer, ordering and matching. Add number and open-answer questions manually in the builder.
- Files themselves aren't stored — only the extracted text is kept, and only while the draft exists.

> [!WARNING]
> An AI test is a draft. Before publishing, check the correct answers against your documents — that's what the quotes are for.

## Wizard drafts

The wizard saves your work at every step: you can close the page and come back — the next time you open **Test from documents**, you'll see **Continue a draft**. Only the author sees a draft. Delete a draft you don't need with **Delete draft** on the **Materials** step; abandoned drafts are deleted automatically after 30 days.

## A document in the builder's question generator

If the test already exists and you need questions from a document, open the **Questions with AI** window in the builder and click **From the knowledge base** or **From a file** — the document text is inserted into **Topic or material text**.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is there no "Test from documents" button?

The button is shown when AI is enabled for your company. If AI features aren't included in your plan, opening the wizard shows a note about plans in **Settings → Plan**.

### AI couldn't read a file — what should I do?

Make sure the file opens and isn't password-protected. Save old formats (.doc, .ppt) as .docx/.pptx or PDF. If the file has no text at all, take photos of the pages and upload them.

### Will employees see which document a question comes from?

No. Document links and quotes are visible only in the wizard. Answer explanations are saved in the test and shown to employees if **Full review** is selected in the settings.
